"Small" is in - at least in home building and remodeling. There's less opulence and flamboyance than in the McMansions of the past, but no fewer amenities. There's plenty of remodeling going on in the Puget Sound, but with a difference. Cost and frugality are key factors.

Among the homes being built this week at the Seattle Home Show are:

- A beachfront cottage with separate guest and master suites
- A "Built Green" contemporary home that works equally well in urban or remote settings
- A community of mini cabins that can serve as extra bedrooms or studios in an urban setting, or as a retreat in remote locations
