Top Tips to Make Your Home Show Experience Last Year Round

The Seattle Home & Garden show may be over, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait until the next show to start planning some home improvement projects or getting ideas for everything that has to do with the home and garden.  Here are some tips on how to make your home show experience last year round.

  • Did you get a lot of information from exhibitors when you visited the show?  If so, start organizing that information into what your top 5 projects or ideas for the home will be.

  • Research those companies online and/or in person to see if they are a good fit for you.

  • Finally, if you decide to reach out, let them know you saw them at the Seattle Home & Garden Show!

Will Thomas Designs Launches the Cool Room Concept, a New Building Design Service for Dealing with Weather Extremes

Certified building designer and show exhibitor Will Thomas of Will Thomas Designs is known for older home design services and his seamless additions that look like they are original to the home. At the Seattle Home & Garden Show, he is introducing a new design service to help homeowners deal with weather extremes:  the Cool Room Concept.  Emphasizing low-cost ways on how to deal more effectively with extreme weather, the Cool Room Concept focuses on everything from insulation and passive heating/cooling (such as adding porch overhangs), to transforming basements – often the part of the home least affected by temperature outside - into living spaces that can comfortable handle extreme hot or cold weather.

The Cool Room Concept can be successively applied to almost any home - each according to the existing configuration of the structure. Sometimes the concept works better as part of a larger addition/remodel project, sometimes it works fine with an existing house layout, with very minor changes inside.

Tiny Homes are Big at the Seattle Home & Garden Show 2023

A tiny home village built by Carriage House Northwest highlighting the latest trends in affordable housing, includes tiny homes that can be used in a variety of ways - from creating additional living spaces, accommodating aging parents or simply as affordable primary residences to help alleviate the region’s affordable housing crisis.

Detached accessory dwelling units (DADUs) are increasing in popularity, especially as homeowners look at ways to do more with their current properties rather than moving, due to high housing costs and mortgage interest rates.  Modular DADUs, which can be built offsite in a factory and then delivered to a site and placed on permanent foundation, also are increasing in popularity and adoption.

All the homes in the exhibit focus on affordable housing, whether it is for use as primary residences (including expanding living space) or recreational housing.  Among the tiny homes on display are the Yucatan, a 26 foot tiny home on wheels with a loft and kitchen; and the Iliad, a 16 foot tiny house on wheels for under $50,000.

Top 5 Trends for the Home in 2023

At this years Seattle Home & Garden Show, the top trends for the home will be on display giving showgoers the opportunity to spruce up their current homes with bold, modern colors and textiles for the kitchen, adding a tiny home addition as a secondary residence or rental unit, to installing an alternative energy source solution such as a complete offgrid solar system for extreme weather conditions.

Here are the top 5 trends for the home in 2023 to look for when visiting the show:

● Multigenerational living. With the high cost of housing combined with high interest rates, Northwesterners increasingly are turning towards multigenerational living, whether it is grown children moving back with their parents or aging parents moving in with their grown children.

● Aging in place. Includes creating living space for caretakers in the home as well as adding features to make the home more accessible, including a universal design tub to shower conversion that improves bathing safety without demolishing the old tub.

● Tiny homes for affordable housing, whether they are primary residences, additions to an existing property or houses for recreational property.

● Alternative energy, from a complete offgrid solar system to solutions for extreme weather conditions. Includes whole house fan systems that both cool the home’s inside temperature faster than air conditioning and purify the air at the same time from allergens and pathogens such as COVID, as well as cool room concepts for unique ways to weatherize your home for heat domes and other weather extremes.

● Staying in place, including remodeling rather than moving.
