"Check out" local tool lending trends through REconomy’s tool library demo area at the show

When you begin your next D.I.Y. project and realize you need a tool, but don’t want to purchase it for one time or limited use, REconomy may offer a solution. This local non-profit is attracting national attention and a growing number of members who can “check out” more than 11,000 at tool libraries in NE Seattle and Shoreline. It is a terrific way to save money, space and the environment.

Tool lending is rapidly expanding, and in addition to REconomy’ s locations there are 11 other “tool libraries” in the Seattle-Tacoma area. REconomy comes to the show sharing its mission promoting sustainability and a sharing community through access to a variety of tools including saws, drills, mowers, pressure washers – even catering and party supplies. It also offers a variety of classes covering home improvements, energy-saving solutions, gardening and other useful topics.

Add this new attraction to your “go-to” list of things to see at the show. The REconomy activity area will include “how-to” demonstrations, information on classes, memberships and tool donation opportunities. Come and spin the "Wheel of Tools" to win a free hand tool and a discount coupon for reused building materials. We’re turning “80”: celebrating four generations fresh ideas and professional know-how for homes and gardens

It’s our 80th anniversary and the Seattle Home & Garden Show has plenty to celebrate this year as the oldest and largest home and garden event on the West Coast.

We have been family-owned since 1939 when President Franklin Roosevelt commissioned the McDonald family to produce “Back to Work” events as the country emerged from The Great Depression. With the theme “Things Look Fine for ’39,” the first show was a big success, attracting celebrities including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and publisher William Randolph Hearst.

Four generations later, we are proud of our legacy of spotlighting forward-looking trends, products and services from hundreds of local businesses.

Meeting multiple needs, versatile “tiny home” models gain in popularity

Call them a “tiny home” or ADU, smaller dwellings are finding their way into our lives. Their versatility makes them an attractive option for a variety of needs:  vacation getaway, starter home alternative, detached home office or studio and more. And if you’re thinking about adding Accessory Dwelling Unit, local cities and counties are embracing ADU’s as an option to meet growing housing demands.

At the forefront of these trends, award-winning DeTray’s Custom Housing is presenting a 587-square-foot design at this year’s show. “The Ridgewood” spotlights an idea-generating floorplan and outstanding built-in cost savings features, including the NEEM Energy Star rating. For information click here

Complementing the display, Kairos Outdoor Living has created an inviting landscape with a paver patio feature, artificial grass, seating walls and outdoor lighting.

If you have a smaller space footprint but still have a need, Seattle Tiny Homes, Inc. is displaying a 192-square-foot model with a nifty loft design. Visit here to learn more.
