Now Under Construction at Seattle Home Show 2012: Outdoor Living and Wine Garden

It is the sound of hammers swinging and of trucks rolling as setup continues for the 68th annual Seattle Home Show. Exhibitors, who represent the leading building, design and landscape professionals in the Northwest, are working furiously to complete their showcase displays in time for Saturday’s opening.

Going up in the East Hall is the Outdoor Living and Wine Garden, a key feature of this year’s Show. This 10,000 square foot display created by London Design Build will highlight all the latest in outdoor living. In addition to a series of outdoor vignettes (in Northwest Asian and Tudor themes), the exhibit will include a Wine Tasting area featuring some of the best in Northwest wines. Even if you’re not a wine aficionado, there will be plenty to see; by show time, the Outdoor Living and Wine Garden will feature six decks, four hardscape areas, pergolas, water features, evergreens and a variety of seasonal plants for a late winter/early spring garden.

The pace continues at Seattle Home Show 2012 as exhibitors work to complete their displays at the nation’s oldest and largest consumer home show. By Saturday, nearly 500 exhibits featuring all the latest products, trends and services for the home will be constructed and completed for the public’s viewing pleasure!

Can you guess what this relatively empty space with its large pile of dirt will be? By show opening, this will be a fully landscaped display garden with backyard cottage!

Malone’s Landscaping is creating an inviting Northwest garden with water features, low maintenance plants and comfortable outdoor living spaces reflecting the season. ShelterKraft Werks is erecting one of its unique backyard cottages made from recycled shipping containers. See the pictures of the display in progress as well as a rendering of what the display will look like when completed.

Seattle Home Show 2012 is just around the corner, and setup is underway for the 68th edition of the nation’s oldest and largest home show. “We’re Having a House Party” is the theme of this year’s Show, and exhibitors are busy getting “party ready” for Seattle Home Show’s opening on Saturday. Backyard cottages, year round outdoor spaces and simpler living are among just some of the highlights the public will see at this year’s Show. The Big Green Egg (which gets its title from its uncanny resemblance to a big green egg) is one of the many new products for outdoor living and entertaining being featured at Seattle Home Show 2. It was at Zinfandel, the pioneering concept in Chicago, that Thomas and Deborah met and began forging their lifelong passion for food and family. They moved to L.A. to work in motion picture catering as well as a stint catering for private jets at the 14 regional airports in and around Los Angeles County. Deborah moved on to become the Executive Chef at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Woodland Hills. Thomas moved on to become a Store Manager for Starbucks.

Shortly after the birth of their second child, they decided it was time to return home to be close to Deborah’s family in the Seattle area. They settled in West Seattle where they have lived since 2005. Deborah continued her tenure with Maggiano’s by opening the Lincoln Square location in Bellevue. The couple saw the opportunity to open Avalon as the perfect way to pay back the community of West Seattle and the surrounding region for offering a highly satisfying way of life.

This year, green is the theme at Seattle Home Show 2, which is a one-stop shopping showcase of all that is hot for the home. New this year is the New Products Pavilion, which highlights many of the latest in exterior and interior products for the home. Show visitors are in a buying mood as Seattle Home Show 2011, the nation’s oldest and largest home show, marks the final day of its annual nine day run.

“The public is definitely responding to the current market conditions that make now one of the best times to buy or remodel a home,” said Mike Kalian, executive director of the Seattle Home Show. “Interest rates are about as low as they going to get, and housing prices probably are at near bottom as well. All this combined makes 2011 one of the best years in recent times to move forward on a home purchase or home improvement project.”

In the waning moments of this year’s Show, visitors are enjoying themselves as they stroll among the nearly 600 exhibits devoted to the newest in interior and exterior home improvements. Others are taking the opportunity to sit in on one of the Show’s “Meet the Experts” Seminar Series to get expert insight on their home improvement needs.

Coming up next will be Seattle Home Show 2, the fall edition of the Show. More information, including dates for the 2011 version of Seattle Home Show 2, will be announced in April.

The Seattle Home Show is open for business today.

“The streets around Seattle are clear and wet,” said Mike Kalian, Managing Director of the Seattle Home Show. “Temperatures are warming up during the day, so show visitors should have no trouble getting here.”

Today is the last day for show goers to get a free antique appraisal from Dr. Lori, nationally known antiques expert and personality. Her appearances are at 12:30pm and 3:30pm.

The Vashon II

Crowds are brisk and consumers are in a buying mood as Seattle Home Show 2011 marks its opening day.

On Idea Street, show visitors are lining up for a first hand tour of the latest in home design. Making its Northwest debut on this year’s Idea Street is The Vashon II, a three bedroom, two bath rambler by Timberland Homes. The 1638 Vashon II offers visitors a warm, comfortable living experience with a lush opulent look – but priced at an affordable $172,000, built and delivered to the customer’s site. Interiors are by PCS Design. Outside, Malone’s Landscaping has created a complementary landscape, including a waterfall.

Family Outdoor Fun Corner

Adjacent to Timberland Homes is a Seattle Home Show first –the Family Outdoor Fun Corner. This fun-filled exhibit features something for everyone, from a huge oversized play set for the youngest members of the family to all the finest in outdoor living. Designed by London Landscaping, the Family Outdoor Fun Corner includes outdoor grills, a spa and other features from Aqua Quip, a freestanding pizza oven and fireplace by Belgard, and outdoor play equipment by Rainbow Systems. Rounding out the corner is a cabin – complete with wraparound porch – and shed by Better Built Barns, which can be used for entertaining or for the overnight guest.

Coast Cabins

Next on Idea Street is a cozy cabin display by Coast Cabins. These environmentally friendly buildings have the look and feel of real wood cabins, but in actuality are made with a proprietary tongue and groove technology that can be erected using only a rubber mallet. Coast Cabins are available either as kits for the do it yourselfer or can be constructed onsite by the company. A garden by Legacy Landscaping completes the display.

Aurora Quality Buildings

Rounding out Idea Street is a display of mini-cabins and outbuildings by Aurora Quality Buildings. These mini-cabins are constructed ahead of time by Aurora and then transported to the customer’s sight, making them ideal either for backyard cottages or for remote locations.

It’s move-in time for the Home Sweet Seattle Home Show as the exhibitors for the 2011 show prepare their exhibits for the exciting nine-day run. The sound of hammers and power saws echo through Qwest Field Event Center, with forklifts and trucks maneuvering loads that will become model homes, window and door displays and dozens of booths showing the latest kitchens, baths, technology and more.

Chefs from Puget Sound’s Top Restaurants Entertain Seattle Home Show 2 Attendees

At Seattle Home Show 2, show visitors are having the chance to learn to cook like the pros from chefs at some of the top restaurants in town at the Seattle Home Show 2’s Cooking Demonstration Series. Chefs such as Chef Gabriel Cabrera of Salty’s in Redondo Beach have been entertaining show visitors as well as sharing some of their own cooking secrets as they demonstrate live how to prepare some of their favorite recipes.

Chef Cabrera demonstrated how to cook a crustaceous crab cake with piquant pepper aioli. All audience members received a copy of the recipe along with a discount coupon for a lunch or dinner at Salty’s. Chef Cabrera, who said he likes a lively audience, encouraged the audience to clap and ask questions, with a free brunch at Salty’s given the most enthusiastic audience member.

Other chefs scheduled to appear at Seattle Home Show 2 are Chef Franz Junga of Il Fornaio Saturday at 4 PM, Chef James Gibson, Salty’s on Allki on Sunday at noon and Chef Michael Hillyer of Daniel’s Broiler Sunday at 2 PM.

Local Custom Home Builder Showcases Unique Low-Impact Home at Seattle Home Show 2

Seattle Home Show 2 exhibitor Speciality Built Construction has long been a pioneer in green and low impact construction. At Seattle Home Show 2, SBC is showcasing one of its recently completed custom homes: a one-of-a-kind low impact green home featuring timber frame construction.

“The goal was to build a home to assure low impact to the earth and originally to achieve a 4 Star Built Green certification,” says Rick Stockmann, principal of SBC. “Once that was achieved and the homeowners saw how far they had come, they decided to achieve a 5 Star Built Green certification.”

Listed here are just some of the unique items that were points achieved to qualify for the 4 Star. “What makes it so interesting is that we achieved 635 points when only 500 points were needed for a 5 Star certification,” says Stockmann. Among the points rated are:

Excavation - there were no soils removed from the site.
Masonry - all stone used was excavated from the site.
Building Products - FSC Certified (Forest Stewardship Council) or similar process followed.
Electrical - Solar voltaic panels wired to operate the transfer of collected power back to the "grid" for credit in the future operation of the home, along with LED, CFL, and low voltage lighting plan which allows them to achieve 75% less cost
Landscaping -- All rockery was provided by the on site excavation for the foundation of the home. Plantings were all "native low water usage plants" plus salvaged plants that were replanted due to excavation. Grasses were a special grass seed that needs virtually no water and only grows to a height of 6 inches for the growing period of the year

SBC is featuring an extensive photographic display of the home, with a personal appearance by the homeowners on Saturday. Also included in the SBC booth is a display by some of the suppliers for the home of various reclaimed and recycled building materials available to consumers.

Seattle Home Show 2 has been in the news throughout the week with previews on some of the region’s top TV shows.

On Wednesday, Q13’s Kaci Aitchinson of “Mornings with Kaci” gave viewers a sneak peak of some of the top features at Seattle Home Show 2, including building a backyard cottage (complete with Kaci in a hard hat on a ladder helping workers), making a hot fudge sundae with Chef Nick Musser of the icon Grill and learning how to save energy with the latest products for home automation
Thursday, Christie Johnson of KING 5 Morning News spent time with the guru of household hints, Joey Green, and The Wall Wizard Brian Santos to get an advance look at their novel and innovative tips to help save money at home. Green shared some of his tips for unusual use for brand name products, including how to clean a toilet with Coke, shave using peanut butter and polish furniture with Spam. The Wall Wizard offered a preview of his tips for “Painting from the Pantry,” such as using lip balm instead of masking tape to create paint lines and cleaning paint brushes in 10 seconds with fabric softener.

As Seattle Home Show 2010 prepares to open tomorrow, exhibitors are readying their exhibits to showcase all the latest products and trends for the Northwest kitchen. In today's economy, the kitchen has become of increasing importance in the home, with Northwesterners often choosing to stay at home and entertain rather than go out. More Homes Going Up on Idea Street

As opening day approaches, construction continues on Seattle Home Show's Idea Streetª, the community of model homes featuring the latest design and building trends in the Northwest. All homes are constructed, finished and landscaped in just five days time.

Smaller homes and a focus on simplicity are the latest trends for the Northwest home, and nowhere is this better highlighted than among the homes going up on Idea Street. The Palm Harbor Avanti is a 600 plus square foot home featuring contemporary styling and sustainable design in a compact footprint. When completed, this Northwest home will feature green building materials inside and out, surrounded by a full Northwest classic garden created by London Landscaping.

Also underway on Idea Street is a display by Aurora Quality Buildings featuring a collection of mini-cabins and outbuildings starting in size at 150 square feet. A complementary landscape garden featuring Northwest native plantings is being created by North Cascades

Nursery.

Rounding out the homes on Idea Street is Coast Cabins. This unique community of homes features compact cabins built using Coast Cabins' patented tongue and groove technology that enables the homes to be constructed using only a rubber mallet. Coast Cabins homes are constructed using green materials. Solar panels, composting toilets and other green practices will be featured in the homes, with landscaping by NW Bloom.

Homes Taking Shape on Idea Street

Construction is well underway on Idea Street (tm), the community of model homes that is a Seattle Home Show exclusive. They feature the latest in home design and landscaping trends for the Northwest market.

Among the homes going up on Idea Street is Number 082, presented by Timberland Homes. Called the Newcastle, this 1900 plus square foot home features a beach theme, with classic Nantucket inspired interiors created by Pam Saftler of PCS Design. Outside, Malone's Landscape is creating a classic Northwest native inspired garden, complete with water features and outdoor living spaces.

Making its debut at Seattle Home Show 2010 is a new cottage from FabCab, a Seattle company specializing in structures for multi-generational living. The FabCab cottage measures a compact 538 square feet, and is constructed using timber frame design. Prefabricated buildings of this design, as well as kits for do-it-yourselfers, are available from the company. Sustainable design and materials are used throughout the building. It's "Home Sweet Home Show" at Seattle Home Show 2010, presented by Arnold's Appliance and Kitchen Plus, as the nation's oldest and largest consumer home show opens its doors this Saturday February 20th at Qwest Field Event Center for its annual nine day run. "The Fortino" from ideabox is a revolutionary new home that is making its debut in Seattle.

This 1,250 square foot home features a sleek contemporary design that works well in both urban and rural settings. The fortino incorporates green features both inside and out, including sustainable bamboo flooring, solid surface renewable counters, flat-finish no VOC drywall, wood passage doorways with reed glass inserts, vessel sinks and dual-flush toilets. Outside, landscaper In Harmony has created a rain garden, a popular way to manage water runoff and eliminate pollutants before the water enters local streams, lakes and groundwater.

Contrasting in design but no less environmentally friendly is the display by Coast Cabins. Leading Appliance Retailer Showcasing Latest Design Trend for the Home

Color is “in” for appliances, and nowhere is this trend better seen than at Crossroads Appliance during the Seattle Home Show 2009. This leading Puget Sound retailer, which has a reputation for stellar service as well as for introducing all the newest trends and products in appliances to the Northwest market, is showcasing the latest in appliances: color.

Everything from washers and dryers to microwaves are now coming in a rainbow hue of colors, from mustard yellow and pumpkin orange to fire engine red and can be seen at Crossroads’ booth at this year’s show.

Sales Brisk, Attendance Strong at Seattle Home Show 2009

Consumers are spending on their homes at the 65th anniversary of America’s Largest and Oldest Home Show

On the opening weekend of the Seattle Home Show 2009, attendance is strong and exhibitors report brisk sales as the nation’s oldest and largest consumer home products showcase celebrates its 65th anniversary. Economy notwithstanding, consumers are indeed spending money on their homes, say the Seattle Home Show exhibitors, who represent the leading building, design and landscaping professionals in the region.

Among the exhibitors reporting strong sales is Palm Harbor Homes, which is displaying a model home “The Paradise” at the show. Palm Harbor says that it sold a home on the first day of the show, with strong interest by additional attendees. London Landscaping concurs, and says that it garnered more sales leads on the first day of the Seattle Home Show 2009 than on any other opening day at previous shows. Contractors at the Seattle Home Show cite brisk traffic, with good qualified leads particularly for remodeling as more consumers opt to improve their current homes rather than move.

“Attendance at this year’s show is strong, especially in light of what is happening in the economy,” says Mike Kalian, executive director of the Seattle Home Show. “While it is not our top year, ticket sales remain healthy.”

THE SEATTLE HOME SHOW OPENS TODAY AT QWEST FIELD EVENT CENTER

Marking its 65th anniversary, the Seattle Home Show, the nation’s oldest and largest consumer home products showcase, opens its doors today at Qwest Field Event Center for its annual nine day run. America’s largest home show runs now through February 22.

This Northwest tradition will feature the latest products, services and ideas for the home, with more than 400,000 square feet devoted to everything from roofing to art. A key highlight of the Seattle Home Show will be a host of model homes showcasing the latest design trends in the Northwest. These include smaller scale designs with less flamboyance than homes in recent years, but with no fewer amenities.

As Americans grapple with an ever tightening economy, local builders and contractors at the Seattle Home Show report solid sales. Northwesterners are opting for remodeling over new home building, as many opt to stay in place rather than move, they report. Financing is available, but follow more traditional lending practices than many loans of recent years. This year, the Seattle Home Show will include an exhibit on financing by the Master Builder’s Association of King and Snohomish County. Representatives from member banks including Bank of America, Banner Bank, Countrywide, Golf Savings Bank, Choice Lending and Quadrant Homes will be on hand to discuss financing options in today’s economy.

Seattle Home Show 2009 takes place now through February 22 at Qwest Field Event Center. Show hours are Saturday 10 AM to 8:30 PM; Sundays 10 AM to 6 PM; Monday through Thursday 10 AM to 7:30 PM; and Friday 10 AM to 8:30 PM.

Local Company To Introduce Illuminative Tiles At The Seattle Home Show 2009

With so much of the public eye focused on the economy, particularly the home market, at the Seattle Home Show we're seeing much that is affirmative, even in these times. While the economy is not what it was a year or two ago, our local builders and contractors - who are among the leading professionals in the region - are reporting solid sales.

In this framework, we're seeing a variety of innovations among our exhibitors, and in upcoming posts plan to focus (among other things) on companies that are not only enduring, but moving forward in today's economy. Among these exhibitors is Tilit LLC, which is introducing to the Northwest its "illuminative" tiles at the Seattle Home Show 2009. These traditional stone-based tiles feature built-in LED lighting, which can be used for design accents, night or accent lighting and more.

The New American Home Featured at the Seattle Home Show 2009

As Americans grapple with the realities of our changing economy, the Northwest home is changing. Nowhere will the "New" American home be in stronger evidence this month than at the Seattle Home Show 2009, the nation's oldest and largest consumer home show.

"Small" is in - at least in home building and remodeling. There's less opulence and flamboyance than in the McMansions of the past, but no fewer amenities. There's plenty of remodeling going on in the Puget Sound, but with a difference. Cost and frugality are key factors.

Highlighting these trends at the Seattle Home Show 2009 will be a variety of model and display homes in a variety of styles and construction methods. All homes are built, landscaped and decorated in just five days time.

Among the homes being built this week at the Seattle Home Show are:

- A 500 plus square foot vacation home replete with floor to ceiling windows for views

- A beachfront cottage with separate guest and master suites

- A "Built Green" contemporary home that works equally well in urban or remote settings

Free shuttle buses from Seattle-area Park 'n Ride lots will not be available to the Seattle Home Show as they have been in the past. However, "Four or More Park Free" is available daily at Qwest Field Parking Garage, Qwest Field North lot and Safeco Field Parking Garage for vehicles with four or more occupants. E-ticket holders may park for $3 at the Safeco Field Parking Garage with shuttle service to Qwest. Additionally, there will be FREE PARKING at Qwest Field Parking Garage and North lot on Tuesday, February 17.

And no more so than this year as the Seattle Home Show, America’s oldest and largest home show, opens its doors for its 65th anniversary this Saturday at Qwest Field Event Center. Set up started today at Qwest Field Event Center for this annual nine-day extravaganza, which features more than 400,000 square feet devoted to the latest products, trends and services for the home.

Model homes and display gardens are among the exhibits that are installed in just five days time. This year we’re seeing smaller scale homes. We’ll keep you posted on the progress of their construction this week as the show prepares to open.

We’re planning to showcase on this blog some of the highlights of the newest products, ideas and services for the home that are at this year’s show. Worried about the real estate market? Talk to some of our exhibitors and you may be surprised to hear how healthy many of them feel the market is here in Puget Sound. While it is not the red-hot market of the past few years, many of the builders and contractors here are reporting solid sales.
